Dr. Hani Al-Faran, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts at An-Najah National University, participated in three research papers presented as part of the First An-Najah Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications, held on Sunday, October 18, 2026, at An-Najah National University in Nablus, with the participation of researchers and academics interested in artificial intelligence applications and their developments across scientific and creative fields.

The research papers focused on the application of artificial intelligence technologies in interior design, exploring their potential to develop design solutions, work with natural materials, and transform the designer’s role and decision-making processes throughout the design process.

The first research paper, titled “The Effectiveness of Generative Artificial Intelligence in Developing Design Alternatives for a Living Room in a Contemporary Palestinian Home: An Applied Study,” was conducted with the participation of master’s students Haya Al-Asi and Razan Nassarreh. The study explored the potential of generative artificial intelligence to propose and develop alternative living room designs that reflect the characteristics of contemporary Palestinian homes and address their functional and aesthetic requirements.

The second research paper, titled “From Psychological Perception to Interior Design: A Comparative Study of Generative Artificial Intelligence’s Ability to Incorporate Natural Wood,” involved Dr. Ashraf Al-Sayegh, Dr. Mohammad Habr, and master’s students Ibtisam Saymeh and Rania Sarsour. The research examined the potential of generative artificial intelligence to incorporate natural wood into interior design by investigating the relationship between psychological perception and design choices, as well as exploring how these technologies can support the development of design solutions involving natural materials.

The third research paper, titled “From Designer to Orchestrator: The Transformation of Decision-Making in AI-Assisted Interior Design,” was authored by Dr. Mohammad Jabr, with the participation of Dr. Hani Al-Faran and master’s students Maysam Abdelhaq and Ruba Yassin. The study examined the transformations artificial intelligence tools have brought to the role of the interior designer, highlighting the shift from directly executing design decisions to guiding the design process and managing the options and alternatives generated by these technologies. This shift reflects the changing nature of decision-making in AI-assisted interior design.

These research contributions highlight the importance of keeping pace with rapid developments in artificial intelligence and exploring its applications in art and design. They open new opportunities for innovation, the advancement of academic and professional practices, and stronger integration between design knowledge and modern digital technologies.

The Faculty of Fine Arts at An-Najah National University reaffirms its commitment to supporting scientific research and encouraging collaborative academic work between faculty members and postgraduate students. These efforts contribute to strengthening the university’s research and creative environment, keeping pace with technological advancements, and advancing the fields of art and design.
